Guided Hiking Tour Through the Baltics

Guided Hiking Tour Through the Baltics

Whether you’re looking for an adventure or a relaxing getaway, the Baltics offer a unique blend of untouched nature and cultural diversity in close proximity. Our journey takes us through the Baltic states—Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—three countries along the northeastern coast of the Baltic Sea, each offering its own distinct charm and a wealth of tourist attractions to explore.

The capitals of these nations—Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn—have a special allure. Since gaining independence, they have been revitalized with new splendor. Street cafés reminiscent of southern Europe, exquisite hotels and restaurants, cozy jazz bars, magnificent opera houses, and artisan shops—there is something for everyone.

In all three countries, music holds a special place. Whether grand choir festivals, opera performances, pop concerts, or folk music events, singing is deeply rooted in Baltic culture. The national movements from 1987 to 1991 and the peaceful struggle for regained independence are often referred to as the “Singing Revolution.”

The Baltics have a rich and eventful history. Since Christianization, Teutonic knights, kings, the Hanseatic League, and foreign rulers have left their marks. Join us as we wander through narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets, traverse bright forests and untouched moorlands, stroll along secluded sandy beaches, and follow pristine riverbanks…

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Vilnius (Lithuania)

Arrival in Vilnius and transfer to the hotel. Welcome and greeting by the Lithuanian tour guide. A two-hour guided tour of Vilnius Old Town. Dinner and overnight stay in Vilnius.

Day 2: Vilnius – Trakai – Klaipeda (Hiking time: 2 hrs, approx. 6 km, Bus approx. 320 km)

After breakfast, we head towards Trakai. First, we take a hike in Varnikai. Then, we reach Trakai, the former capital of Lithuania. We visit the famous Trakai Island Castle, one of Lithuania’s most renowned attractions, now a museum. After the visit, we take a break to try Kibinai, a local specialty prepared exclusively by the Karaim people. We then continue our journey to Klaipeda, a harbor city on the Baltic Sea, historically known as Memel. Dinner and overnight stay in Klaipeda.

Day 3: Klaipeda – Nida – Klaipeda (Hiking time: 6 hrs, approx. 8 km, Bus approx. 100 km)

Early in the morning, we take a ferry to the Curonian Spit, a 100 km long peninsula and the most famous national park in the Baltics. The spit, ranging from 380 m to 2.8 km in width, is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Our first hike takes us to the Hill of Witches (Raganų Kalnas) in Juodkrante, where numerous wooden sculptures depicting Lithuanian fairy tales have been placed since 1979. Then, we continue by bus to the Great Dune, where we start our second hike leading down to Nida. In Nida, a boat awaits us for a scenic cruise offering breathtaking views of the dunes. After lunch, we visit the Thomas Mann Museum. In 1930, the famous writer built a wooden summer house in Nida, which is now a museum. We return to Klaipeda for a walking tour of the old town. Dinner and overnight stay in Klaipeda.

Day 4: Klaipeda – Pajūris Regional Park – Hill of Crosses – Riga (Hiking time: 2 hrs, Bus approx. 330 km)

Today, we visit Pajūris Regional Park, located near the popular summer resort of Palanga. The park offers about four kilometers of hiking trails through forests and sandy shores. We meet an amber fisherman who will share insights about amber, including how it is washed ashore. After a coastal walk, we continue by bus to the Hill of Crosses, a sacred Lithuanian site where thousands of crosses have been placed, often symbolizing wishes or gratitude. Our journey then takes us to Rundāle Palace, often referred to as the “Versailles of the Baltics.” In the afternoon, we arrive in Riga. Dinner and overnight stay in Riga.

Day 5: Riga – Sigulda (Hiking time: 2 hrs, approx. 6 km, Bus approx. 60 km)

The day begins with a city tour of Riga, the capital of Latvia. A blend of medieval, Art Nouveau, and modern architecture defines this historic city. The old town, with its narrow winding streets, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Castles, guild houses, and the Roland Statue tell the story of past conflicts between archbishops, knights, and Hanseatic merchants. The city’s Jugendstil district was developed in the 19th century. With 700,000 inhabitants, Riga is the only true metropolis in the Baltics.

Next, we drive to Gauja National Park, where we visit the Turaida Museum Reserve and hike through the Gauja Valley to Sigulda. One day is not enough to fully appreciate the beauty of this park. Dinner and overnight stay in Sigulda.

Day 6: Sigulda – Soomaa Moor – Tallinn (Hiking time: 2 hrs, approx. 5 km, Bus approx. 350 km)

Today, we leave Latvia and travel to Estonia, the smallest of the Baltic countries. Our destination is Tallinn, the Estonian capital. On the way, we hike in the Soomaa Moor, known for its “fifth season.” This national park, spanning the Pärnu and Viljandi regions, experiences flooding during snowmelt or heavy rains, turning roads and forests into waterways navigable only by boat.

Upon arrival in Tallinn, we take a guided city tour. Once a significant Hanseatic city under German influence since the 13th century, Tallinn has preserved its medieval heritage while embracing modernity. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 7: Tallinn – Return flight

Transfer to the airport and return flight.
